Egeskov Castle
Feel history come alive at the still-functioning castle when your guide shares its exciting stories.
Our guides have taken visitors through Egeskov (literally, forest of oaks) for many years, and they have benefited from ongoing updates and new information. This means that our guides are incredibly knowledgeable and skilled at sharing the anecdotes. It took an entire forest of oaks to build the castle in the mid-1500s, hence the name. One of the most well-preserved moated castles in Europe, it is said to be under the protection of a wooden figure in the attic. Should this figure be moved, the castle will sink into the moat on Christmas Eve.
The park includes several thematic gardens such as the 1730 Renaissance Garden with a labyrinth (its interior visible from a vantage point). On the other side of a small brook is the English Garden, the Fragrance Garden, and the Water Garden. Sculptures placed throughout the park include the Super Ellipse and the Sundial by Piet Hein.
The structures formerly used for farming now house exhibits of vintage cars and motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, ambulances, and many other fascinating items. Outside, there are playgrounds, treetop walks, a café, tuck shops, and an ice cream stand.
